He envisages a contest for the team. He gave one balloon to each member and asked them to write their name on it. Having done this, he collected the balloons and placed them in a room filled with more than a hundred other balloons of similar color and size. The only distinguishing feature was their names. He now asked the team to go inside the room and pick up the balloon with their name written on it. He gave them just 10 minutes to do the job. Naturally, it was difficult to search for the balloon with their individual name. The team came back unsuccessful. This was a dent to their ego. The boss gave them another chance, but provided a small tip that the team would never forget in their lives. He told them to get the balloons with their names but adopt a different method to do so. In case they found out a balloon belonging to another person, they should shout out the name of that person and hand over the balloon to him/her. Within two minutes, each member came back with his balloon. How was this possible? This is the essence of teamwork. When you work as a team, you should aim for the success of the team and not seek personal glory. In the earlier instance, they limited their search to their names alone. Now, they expanded their minds and brought in the element of team spirit. Now, there was no way the team could lose. This is how Zach Biddle California manages his teams.
